dying fabric

Hi all, hope someone can help. I have a large foot stool with loose covers in dark green and blue. I have now bought a very dark red leather suite and as the foot stool is still in very good condition I would like to dye the covers to a dark red. How do I do it? Which colour dye would be best to use to get the final dark red colour. many thanks for any advice

I think it depends on what fabric it is to get the best result. But I've always used Dylon fabric colours and not had any probs. You can get them in Robert Dyas and bigger Boots and you just do it in the washing machine

thankyou, the fabric is thick cotton/linen, but does the existing colour of the fabric have a bearing on the final colour, i.e. if i bought a red dye and put it on blue fabric would the end result be a dark red ?

Hmm more likely to be purple as a mix of red and blue. Try the dylon site for a dye stripper to take original colour down.

Glad to be of some help. I use washing machine dyes and have always been very happy with the results. Happy dying. PS don't forget to run machine afterwards!!
