I have an 84 year old relative who lives in a council flat; if she is unable to pay her rent are the council likely to evict her? she has no savings nor a private pension.

Have you made sure she is getting any benefits she may be entitled to.
I think they would wonder why she was unable to pay her rent.....
If she has neither savings nor private pension, she should be able to claim Housing Benefit of some sort.
Have a word with the DW&P, she should be allowed some pension credit, Depending on her circumstances her rent and Council tax will be taken care of. If she needs daily help from someone, a carers allowance may apply as well. The DWP will arrange a visit to see her to assess her ability, it would be better if a close member of the family were there to give her some reassurance and maybe help to answer the questions she may not understand. A lot of elderley people are struggling to cope with the bills lately, and miss out on this.
