I think my boiler is giving off fumes, I have a headache, sore throat, tight chest when it's on (maybe the siteing of the fume pipe outside is wrong.) My engineer says it's fine (it's regulary serviced) but I don't agree with him. Do I just have to get a 2nd opinion from another engineer or is there some government/ environmental/safety depart I can contact?Thank you

Could you buy a carbon monoxide meter first and see if this throws anything up. If it does you will then have proof to move forward..

Thank you again treetops - on the shopping list!
The Builder - the actual boiler is on the kitchen wall with an outlet on the outside wall by the back door - I've already had this outlet raised to about 16ft from ground level but I think maybe the fumes are blowing back inside. thank you for you answer.
''boiler is on the kitchen wall with an outlet on the outside wall by the back door''

Ours is the same. We also thought it was emitting fumes but had it tested by an engineer with various meters which showed no leaks. The engineer told us it was blowing back in from the open window and/or door.

(we only ever noticed a smell when the boiler initially kicked in: once it was up and running it was fine).

thanks for that snags - with the door closed it is certainly less noticeable.
if jeza's about, she can tell you how she and micmak felt last year when they were seriously troubled by boiler fumes. Get a CO detector from Homebase or B&Q, tomorrow!
