i phoned insurance company regarding my leak in kitchen which damaged work tops and units. They are sending a survayer on tues. Excess is 350 pounds, 200 of which is water leak excess...i wasnt informed of such an excess???

can i ask them to assess the job and send me a cheque so a local firm could do the work, at least i could leave them in my home without me being there, as i trust them. i have never claimed on my home insurance before and i am new to all this.

Check your small print. Is it in there? I assume you read the contract fully and didn't just sign the bottom?

they would have informed you of the excess on your policy - not their fault if you didn't ask or read it. Regards to payment, all insurance co work differently. For something fairly small, they will probably ask you to get quotes to repair it, then send you a cheque made out to the tradesman that they chose. When we had escape of water we had to get at least quotes for fixing it
When we had a leak (more like a flood) they came out to assess and within a week or so we received a cheque through the post. That was for walls & ceilings. They arranged their own people to fit new carpets as it was like for like.
The excess would have been in the policy you signed , they don't have to actually tell you in words.
