I live in rural Wiltshire. I want to erect a small wooden garage in my garden for my garden tools and lawnmower. Do I need planning permission for this? The size is 5.2 X 3.2 metres.

The rules are numerous on this sort of thing so Chris has given you the link from which you should be able to determine the answer in your specific case. If you are unsure about any aspect having perused these rules, post again and I (or one of the others who also understand planning consent pretty well) should be able to help.

Thank you very much, both of you. I live just outsider Devizes in a tiny hamlet. The planning dept used to be in Devizes but when I went there yesterday it was all closed up and deserted so I think they've moved to Trowbridge. As our place is a small hamlet I think I'll take a gamble. The shed is from Quickgardens and they're Czeck and a very good company. The shed walls are 44mm thick, and it's the smallest garage listed.
Wiltshire operates an area based service for the planning officers, but the physical offices were rationalised to one central place in Trowbridge. You can speak to a planning officer for your area by finding the number on the central county website, but visiting them is pretty difficult for free advice these days.
It's a small risk to erect, the worst that could happen is you ate asked to remove it.
By the way, the constraint you are most likely to rub up against is the one that limits the height of the roof ridge to 4m above ground, but that reduces to 2.5m ridge height if any part of the shed is within 2m of the property boundary. Unless you live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, when it's different.

Buildersmate, thank you very much for your input. If you have the time I have uploaded http://i58.tinypic.com/ofde05.jpg if you can make any sense of it! And the garage I am thinking about is Quickgarde.co.uk It's a Czech firm that make very good sheds. It's the smallest garage at 5.2x3.2 and I want it for a lawnmower. We are in an AONB! I could site it 2 metres from the edge of our plot. Our neighbours are very friendly. Is it worth the gamble? Sorry to give you this trouble! Bramley.
OK, so the proposed location is close to your existing dwelling, so the rule about no shed greater than 10 square metres in area further than 20m of the dwelling is not an issue.
You just need to check the rule about ridge height from the shed spec. Being 3.5m wide, it is very likely under 4m, but greater than 2.5m. So the issue would be the distance to the neighbour's boundary.
Even if greater than what height is permitted, it looks well screened and if neighbour is OK about it, no-one will perhaps question it.
The worst that could happen is you are asked to remove it or apply for retrospective consent.

Very many thanks for looking and your advice. I think it's sound.
With best wishes, Bramley.
