Shower Problems.

We bought our house four years. It had had a lot of work done on it including a new shower unit. The walls are lined with large tiles of mock marble and look nice. We did have a problem with leakage, and this was traced to two cracked tiles with hairline cracks, and treated successfully. The problem is now the shower tray has started squeaking when I stand on it! Should I be concerned and should I contact my insurance company before anything does go wrong? Any advice gratefully received. Bramley.

It may be worth you taking a look at it and confirming the cause in case it is something that will get worse. But I'd suspect there is some small motion between the tray and whatever is holding it, and not a big deal save for the annoyance.

I think you'll find the insurance company will rate it as normal wear and tear, so they won't cover it.

I doubt if it's an insurance matter, Bramley. There's been no damage. The tray simply wasn't installed properly.

Even if it's on an upstairs timber floor, a tray should be fully bedded. That means on a layer of sand & cement, or plaster. It's not to "stick it down", but to prevent movement and squeaking.

With modern heavy stone trays, even a thin bead of silicone sealant is enough.

If you can get at the bit that's jumping up and down, then you may be lucky with a wedge driven in... then cut off. Otherwise, the only thing is to take the tray out and bed it properly.
