Conservatory Straight Off The Kitchen

After my kitchen extension /revamp I would like to add a conservatory straight from the kitchen with no wall in between (so the kitchen and conservatory would all be one room)

In the back of my mind I recall seeing on the TV that this is not allowed (maybe fire risk or something).

Is this true or did I dream it?

Can be done with a wall taken down and a properly installed rsj lintel for support for the opening. But the conservatory needs to be good specification for security and thermal requirements, with your heating extended into it.

I think it would look great too but you must take advice on the heating bit. My conservatory is like an ice-box in winter and the proverbial hothouse in summer, usually far too hot to sit in without doors and windows open.

I went to look at a property like that for my Mum and the reason I didn't suggest choosing it was because it was freezing and that wasn't even in the winter.

I would go for one with a well insulated tiled roof and Velux type roof lights.This room will be considered as part of the house and will need to comply with building regulations.That said, it could add value to the property ..unlike a plastic greenhouse stuck to the wall :-)

Ryzen has already said it for me, Darcy. It would be treated as a full extension. Building Regulations for heat losses, for instance, would mean that it would no longer actually be a conservatory.

In order to have it as a conventional conservatory, why not fit a set of exterior doors across the opening?
Folding doors would leave almost all of the opening available. Quite an expensive option though :o(

We fitted a conservatory the exact same width as the kitchen and almost twice as long. It is north facing and only sees partial sun at the height of summer. Besides that it never gets a glimpse of the sun.
I can only say that if you suffer with temperature extremes, as in freezing and too hot. Then your conservatory is either badly sited or poorly insulated.
We built ours on a number of 8"x 2" frames resting on bearers. The frames were packed with Kingspan before the floor was laid. The side walls all had the same treatment. Gas filled units fitted all round. Since it was built we very rarely sit in the lounge and more or less live in the conservatory 95% of the time. It is very easily heated and retains the heat due to the overdose of insulation. Only this morning the roof and windows were completely covered in ice outside and it was really nice an cosy within ... have been sat here in shorts and tee shirt all day.
We have retained the patio door between the kitchen and the conservatory. Without a doubt it is the best improvement we have done to our house.
We were so impressed with the gas filled units performance that I immediately replaced all the units throughout the rest of the house.
