Benefits
5 Answers
It has been a long time since I had to rely on any benefits and I am a bit out of date. I am worried about my health and wondered if there would be any benefits should I be unable to work. I work 6 days a week as a self-employed / part-time employed teacher. I am single and am buying my own house. I am worried that if I was unable to work I would lose my house. Is that the case nowadays? THANKS

Hi Scarlett, I'm so sorry to hear your not feeling too good these days.
Do not worry about your home hun ok? it does depend on when you took your mortgage out, ie: before a certain year... and then if it's after that particular year ie:1994 then they make you wait about 9 mnths before they start helping. Your council tax will be paid so that's a money worry you dont have to think about.
They will probably make you wait about 3 mnths before your application goes through.... and they'll probably loose it 3 times cos' they like to do that... it's a real stress but stick with it and you'll be fine.
You will have to pay your interest on your mortgage until you start getting help from DWP. I basicaly starved for 3 months and that's with M.S, no sight and couldn't walk lol....
As long as you've paid your N.I and self employed taxes etc you should be fine...
