Foisty / Mouldy smells

Our coat cupboard constantly smells damp. We have placed a humidifier in there which is collecting loads of water which I hope will help.

The problem is the coats which we do not wear very often. We are just getting the winter coats out now and they all smell really foisty. Is there someway we can get rid of this smell easily ?

you need good air circulation in there. Put a vent in the door or leave it open slightly.

The doors are actually 'perforated' so the air flow should be good. Also when I said humidifier I actually meant dehumidifier ... doh !

Trick used by ex-pats in the humid tropics before the advent of air conditioning was to install a 60w lamp in the bottom of a wardrobe. Warmed the air, stopped fustiness. Suitable guard needed, of course!

It would seem you could go to the source. Where is the moisture coming from? If it is from some form of seepage you will need to find it. If it is from too much humidity in the air you will need to stop that. Once you know which it is you can easily stop it.
I once built a closet in my basement (at my wife's insistence), quite near our laundry. In order to prevent your problem I was careful to use plastic sheeting on all sides and top before finishing the inside with cedar. I also used vinyl flooring on the floor. When I installed the door I took great pains to see that it was as close to airtight as possible. As a result we have had no trouble with moisture or mildew in the twentyodd years since.

I don't know if any of this will help you but it might point in a direction you haven't looked.
