But basically a flat is part of a much larger building, on a single storey, with other flats above, below and alongside.

Tenement is a Scottish word for a block of flats.

A maisonette is like a flat, but on two storeys, with other maisonettes above, below and alongside.

A house is a home that stands on its ground, under its own roof, with no properties above or below. There may be other houses either side.
As above but a maisonette is a two storey building which could be above or below a flat or another maisonette.
Just to add to Ethel, a Tenement, although it is a Scottish term for a block of flats, is most usually built with blonde or red sandstone.
A new block of flats would never be called a tenement.
(English law only- not Scottish)

House (inc. bungalow) can be freehold or leasehold.
Flat (inc. maisonette) must be leasehold unless covered by Commonhold scheme.
Keep well away from freehold flats, because of the dreaded fying freehold problem.
