Our cellar is a batcave

I've just gone downstairs to the cellar to get mince out of the freezer to defrost it overnight. As I turned the light on in the room where the freezer is, what I initially thought was a giant moth flapped towards me, flapped back away from me, I ducked and it then flapped past me into the main room of the cellar. It was really slow and I had a good look at it as it went past me so I know it was a bat. Its wingspan was a little less than my outstretched hand.

I've just left a message with the bat help line so they'll hopefully ring me back tomorrow. I gather that it's looked for a suitable hibernating place and come up with our cellar but I'm not 100% sure that I want it in there. We've got a wattle and daub type ceiling with many a gap, so it's going to be extremely well hidden.

Perfect timing for Halloween, however....

Lucky you. I love bats. It sounds like a little pipistrell (sp) bat, they are harmless, they are also protected, meaning you cannot remove them. Its good that you have left a message on the bat help line, they will get back to you and advise you. You are in the UK??

You could always buy a bat box and put it high in a tree in your garden, you never know they may go out ther instead.

I spoke to a lady from the bat help line on Tuesday, 2nd October, who said they'd give our details to a volunteer in our area who would get in touch. I hope still that it is just one bat in our cellar.

I want it removing, but in the meantime I don't want it to die. I was hoping that in between my call and the volunteer coming they'd tell us what to put in the cellar so the bat could feed and drink (in case it can't get out) but they haven't so what can we do apart from a saucer of water?

I can't get it out of my head that it's got in and can't find its own way back out and will die for lack of food which would be awful.
