We are currently in a 6 month contract for our flat which is up in January but my partner has just left his job and we want to move from the area. Is there any way to get out of these contracts?

perhaps your partner shouldn't have left his job if he knew there was still a few months rent to be paid. if you have a good relationship with your landlord, he or she may let you leave early, but i very much doubt it. they rent the property to earn a living, not to do anyone any favours.

Legally, you have a contract up until January. However, you could approach the landlord and tell them your situation. You will be liable for rent until a new tenant moves in if they can find someone suitable before January plus any re-advertising costs etc.
Go and talk with the landlord you may get him in a good mood
