I have taken down the hedge between us and our next door neighbours- with their agreement; although the original hedge was planted totally on my side of the original post and wire boundary fence, which still exists. I would like to now build a 5' high hit and miss fence but I need to know which side of the fence should have the 'fair face'?
If you are paying for the fence you can have the fair face towards you. If you are sharing the cost with your neighbour then you must come to an amicable agreement.
I always thought that the fair face (love that description) goes to neighbour. However, we did actually find a fence last year that was the same either side, so both were pleased, and each party bought half the panels. Lovely jubbly! :)
If you are paying for the fence and it is being erected on your land then you can have whichever side you like facing you. It is customary to have the good side facing your neighbours but it is not law.
If your neighbours get the 'bad' side and don't like looking at the fence posts / rails etc then they can erect their own fence, on their own land, with the good side facing inwards.
Personally, if I have forked out for a new fence then I would want to be looking at the good side.
