However mistakes can occur. For example, Freda Smith (who has loads of debt) might move out of a property. The next occupier is John Smith (who is unrelated to Freda, and has never even heard of her. However a credit reference agency (which is unaware that Freda has moved) might see that the new occupier shares the same surname and assume that he's Freda's husband or her brother. They could then create an 'association' on their files between Freda's and John's credit records.
Credit reference agencies are obliged, by law, to provide with a copy of your credit record for a small fee. In practice you can get a report for free by signing up to their subscription services and then cancelling your subscription before any money is charged to your card. The main agencies are Experian:
http://www.experian.co.uk
Equifax:
http://www.equifax.co.uk/
and
CallCredit:
http://tinyurl.com/2bsnle8
If you find that your credit rating has been incorrectly linked to someone else's you can file a 'notice of disassociation' with the agencies to remove that link.
