I would be astonished if any of them thought they could get away with going back to any form of self-regulation.
Given the public outcry, The Telegraph revelations, the NAOs recent refusal to sign off on the expense claims, and ongoing criminal proceedings against discredited former ministers and the like, those MPs most outspoken against the new rules could be likened to spoilt brats stamping their feet and crying "no fair".
Its possible that Cameron was being quoted out of context with this comment about scrapping the system next year - I think he was talking about certain very specific elements of the rules, governing the transport of the MPs kids to and from the constituency etc - hence the comment about rules not being "family friendly".
