MPs continued to abuse their taxpayer-funded allowances by submitting millions of pounds worth of improper claims in the year following the expenses scandal, the national auditor disclosed yesterday.
The extent of the misuse has led the National Audit Office (NAO) to refuse to sign off the House of Commons’ accounts for the first time in history, after one in four claims were found to be lacking the proper documentation to back them up.
In an indictment of the discredited Commons fees office, Amyas Morse, the Auditor General, disclosed that £14 million of taxpayers’ money was paid out on expenses which could not be properly accounted for. //
