Really - if you can afford it, get it skimmed. If not. be prepared to keep soaking it, and scraping. And..... repeat....

Thanks but have tried soaking and scraping it. No luck. Tried steaming it and scraping it, it kind of words but it takes ages to do one part. Are there any other ways?

Have you hired a steaming machine from a tool-hire shop? That was the only thing that worked for the wallpaper in my house when I bought it.

And speaking from experience - expect to find three other layers of wallpaper under the woodchip! On the bright side look forward to mild agoraphobia in your new, bigger room!!

No I have a small steaming machine! Have to hold it on the woodchip wallpaper for about 2-4 minutes before you can start scrapping!

Soak with ordinary wallpaper paste for about 20 mins then scrape off. Easy.

Try going over it with something to rough it up a bit first. After this put some warm water and washing up liquid in a bucket and brush this on to the paper. The washing up liquid will stop it drying too quickly and so help loosen it. Do this at least twice before trying to get it off. I find this usually works well. Before doing any of this put some old newspaper or wallpaper along the base of the wall, this will catch any water that splashes and after getting all the paper off you can just roll it up and throw it out so no mess and no bits stuck to the floor.

Hi we had the same problem, but made worse with being painted with gloss paint. Went to local paint shop they loaned me a roller with spikes on it, used that then steamer worked a treat.

The roller with spikes on that fairycakes mentioned can by bought at B&Q or similar for a few quid and they do help.

I know it won't be a help, but I've never had problems with removing woodchip. That said I have a perforation tool and an electric steamer. But if you put it up with normal wallpaper paste, I'm unsure I see why there's a problem. After all paper is just pulped wood anyway isn't it ? Grab a corner and pull ;-)

The problem is, OG, that in the later 50s when woodchip became rather popular, manufacturers decided to give it a water-resistant finish. I was fortunate in that that the house I moved into was covered top to bottom in woodchip - but it was early stuff and not water resistant. Came off as soon as I pointed a damp rag at it!.By the way, water with a touch of wallpaper paste in it is very effective in helping remove old wallpaper.

As nobody has mentioned it .... wear a mask ... a good one.
The woodchip may well have spores in it, they dont cause a problem until you disturb them... i.e. removing the paper.
My neighbour did it a couple of years ago ... he ended up in hospital for three weeks with only a oxygen mask for company.
Be warned..!

@ladybirder you suggestion worked! You told me soak with ordinary wallpaper paste for about 20 mins then scrape off. I started scrapping at 20 minutes but it was very hard. I came back about 1 hour later and it was really easy! Also I steamed over the wallpaper paste with the steamer and it was easy as well! Thank you lady birder!
