Could I have your opinions please. A friend of mine has a 56reg cooper s which is using/losing approx 1.5 ltrs of oil per 1000mls. This seems excessive. It does not smoke and there are no visual signs of leakage. It has not done excessive mileage. It has been suggestied that it is not being driven hard enough and this is causing the problem, which doesn't make sense to me. I was wondering if this is a common fault and if anyone else has experienced this. Looking forward to replies. Many Thanks. Eric.

Could be leaking from Dipstick o ring or sump gasket when the car is moving.
take a look under the car when it is parked - it is highly excessive - sounds like a sump leak to me.
Does the car send out blue smoke from the exhaust? worn oil rings/bores, apart from what has been said get the car compression tested this will tell you the state of the engine, also check the tail end of the exhaust! can you see signs of oil?
Good lord .. This is a 56 plate BMW Mini .. not an old Mini traveller!

It may be the bores HAVE glazed up due to only many short trips and not being used hard enough. That is quite a bit over what I would consider plenty.
Not much can be done .. except maybe a compression test to check out compressions and identift any problem cylinders.
