I get pinky/orange staining around the wash basin plug hole, toilet basin and shower area. Had this ever since we moved into our new house to be honest and wrongly thought it would just go away. Has anyone got a clue as to what it might be? An neighbour said a plumber told them it was a simple adjustment the original plumber should have made but he does not what.

I have something similar in my bathroom.  I've just put it down to being a type of algae that accumulates in bathrooms and I find it wipes off easily with any bathroom cleaner.

If you have an old system with a  galvanised tank or emersion cylinder it could be corrosion coming through with the water. This would cause discolouration.

We live in a very hard water area and get blue discolouration which is very hard to remove, that is copper in the water which turns to copper oxide when it is exposed to water and air. Pink or orange sounds like iron oxidising to rust so as Cetti said could be corrosion from somewhere in the system. Copper is fairly normal to have in the water but I think iron is not as normal. I'm sure it isn't harmful though!
