we would like to self build a small garden wall possibly 3 or 4 bricks high to retain the soil which we are then going to cover with decorative stone, the garden has a very slight incline which will go towards the wall so am looking for any sites on internet to help us please, thanx
Here in the U.S., I've used these to 8 blocks tall and had good success. They're easy to level if you're careful with the first course. They're bedded on a layer of paving block sand and the blocks have a lip on the underside of the back of the block which locks into the one below it. They can be easily formed into curved walls and a "top-off" block can be purchased that really adds a nice finishing touch to the project. They come in several different colors and textures and are quite reasonable at about $.88 to $1.25 (US) per block...
Jack's link says it all, pushy. All I would say is, don't go too mad on the footings. It's a very small load. Just remove topsoil and get down to a good subsoil base, or clay, depending on where you are. 150mm thickness of conc. would be plenty.
I like Clanad's "dry" wall. You could also think about using stone....... either mortared or dry. From an aesthetic point of view, I don't like too many different materials. It can easily look a bit "fussy".
