How to prune a neglected clematis

I have a Clematis Montana which has been severely neglected. It is growing over a wooden arch and on either side of the arch are large conifers. The clematis has very woody stems at the bottom and the only new growth is all over the top of the conifers. Is it possible to hard prune it and give it a new lease of life, or will I end up killing it off? I am prepared that I may not get flowers next year, but to be honest, there weren't that many this year, if it is possible, can someone advise how to do this please. I assume that if it is possible, now would be a good time to do this as it has finished flowering.

No problem cutting that one hard back! You will get flower next year too.
Cut every woody thick stem (I have seen up to 2" thick) to around 2-4ft from ground. It might seem viscious, but it will soon sprout away.
Use big pruner shears.

I had a Montana that got out of control, I severely cut it back and only left about 9" of woody stem. I thought it had no chance of coming back but it did and better than ever.

Also .. Montanas seem to be able to be cut hard back at almost any time.

montana is pruned immediately after flowering...it will come back....very hardy

Jules - no need to take it ground level unless that is what you want to do? You can just try and restructure plant with pruning

How to prune a neglected clematis ?
I thought female circumcision was only practiced elsewhere? Or am I getting confused?
