Is it possible to interconnect two apartments, one on top of each other, by drilling a large hole in the concrete ceiling and fitting a staircase?

The two apartments were not designed to be interconnected in this manner, and we are unsure whether the concrete ceiling would be damaged.

First phone call should be to a structural engineer perhaps? I wouldn't dare risk it

Would anyone know whether this was done anywhere?
You might also need planning permission for merging two dwellings into one....
Anything's possible in Building, atm.
I agree with others though, a Structural Engineer would answer your question easily.
If your floor above is a re-inforced "poured" concrete floor, then I guess you could.
You may well have to consult the original architects for plans and consult an engineer to work out transfer of loadings, etc.
Depending on the construction, it may well be possible.
Sounds like a clever idea tho : )
