Parents have a double glazed unit, main window (guesstimate 1700x600mm) with two top hinged narrow windows across the length above. Closed the top window above resulting in a full height crack in the main window below. Because of the recent heat I guess?
House insurance people (Zurich) said accidental damage and have their appointed glaziers - Martindales - coming to measure up later this week, in the meantime the unit has clearly been compromised and is now blown.
Having checked, Martindales seem to be more inclined to repair rather than replace (if, indeed it's a repair they recommend).
Question is, are these DG repairs any good these days? Or is it a bodgit & leggit type repair that will fail in a while now it’s blown?
Just working out if it’s cheaper to bypass the insurance and increased premiums and whack a new unit in if it’s going to need to be done again in 6 months anyway? Premium £350pa with £50 excess.
Jon, the ONLY possible repair is to fit a replacement DG unit. I can't think of any way they could do anything less.
Heat doesn't usually play any part in DG failure. It's most likely a fault in the glass, or slight damage when originally fitted, that has only now developed into a crack. :o)
Just go to a local glass company and ask them to replace it.
They will measure .. check if it is Solaglass or special glass, and come back and change it.
Easy job.
Hi Jon, it would have to replaced anyway you cannot repair a crack, this should cost you around £130. If you live in the Birmingham area try http:www.0121repairs.co.uk
