Baby Shower

My best Friend is pregnant with her first child
I am thinking about throwing her a baby shower with around 18people will be invited.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on things to take to a baby shower, what decorations banners,balloons etc
Should I send invations ? or maybe a text or an email? I know its not really that common for the UK to celebrate baby showers like the usa does but I thought it would be a nice surprise.

So really my question is, where do I start what do I need etc..

P.s the venue is at a restaurant.

I've been to a few.
The best one I went to had a colour theme. Pink, yellow and green (all pale). Home made cupcakes were decorated in either pink, green or yellow. As were the balloons, streamers, banners, spotted tablecloth etc etc. I looked superb! I have a friend who makes excellent nappy cakes - look them up on google. Great gift and something different. I threw my sis-in-law a baby shower at my home, we had banners, balloons, buffet, games. I bought her a nappy cake from here and they also had some lovely ideas for "party bags"
