my double built in oven has broken and i really don't have the cash for a new one. The single ovens are much cheaper, but the space is for a double.
Could i put a single in the space and maybe my microwave on the top? (on a shelf of course!)

Find a local, well recommended, joiner: he will sort that out for you.
for the money you pay a joiner, you may as well get a double oven!
What gap are you trying to fill with what? You do have tape measure?
There is nothing to stop you putting whatever into a matching space, but due to the heat that is likely to come off an oven there may be issues with anything exposed to it. Yes, a shelf separating the two appliances should be enough to ensure a trouble free co-existence.
