Want to replace a double switch in the hall. One switch operates the light in the porch (simple off/on). The other is for one end of a two-way switch in the hall itself. What do I need - a two-way, 3-gang? Thanks for any help.
Note down/take photo of connections in existing switch BEFORE you remove them! Make sure you turn off the power to that circuit and CHECK it is dead BEFORE you do anything.
It is illegal to replace a light switch unless your a registered electrician in this day and age apparently. I don't know if that's true or not. If so I guess if anything goes wrong the insurance won't pay out knowing it was done illegaly!
A two-way switch has three contacts so a 2-gang 2-way switch will have 6.
One will only be used as a simple switch (2 contacts) so 5 of the six will be used.
Thanks again to all. Talk about complicated ... forgot to mention that 2 of the six holes are "bridged" across ...! Keep taking the tablets (or the tabloids, as the papers might say)!
