house plant question...

hello, i have a house plant and i think its a "bords nest plant..it has big green with one brown vein running thru the middle... leaves similar to those on a banana plant just so you get the jist..well i've noticed on some leaves where they should be all green some are brown and papery round the edges. i think this could have something to do with the watering..ie..too much or not enough, or even where i'm putting the water (should it be in the middle where the growth is coming from??),,thanks for any help in advance!

stand the pot into water and dont put near central heating systems.
