That way you get the benefit of the sprung mattress and can have it set to how soft or firm you prefer as well as getting the added benefit of the top layer moulding around your body shape.
I have just had fusion surgery on the lower four vertebrae in my back and have had no problems getting a comfortable position on my mattress which is made up as above.
Spent the best part of four weekend's going around trying different types and makes of mattress before settling for the one we did. It is important to remember that we spend nearly a third of our lives in bed but people spend minutes choosing a mattress but months finding their perfect car which they are in for less than a hundredth of their lives.
Expect to pay in the region of £400 - £700 to get a decent mattress that is going to give you proper support and comfort!
Hope this has given you something to think about!

Because Mr LL doesn't like memory foam mattresses - they make his back ache?? - we compromised. We have a new good sprung mattress and, like postdog, a silentnight memory foam topper. We have an oak bed with slats like Woofgang. Both of us are now sleeping very comfortably.
I bought myself a Tempur pillow but it feels like a brick and makes my neck hurt, so it was a bad investment.

I found the same with the full memory foam mattress lofty, I had one on a weeks trial and got the company to collect it after two nights as it was causing all sorts of problems with my back. The wife slept downstairs on the couch after the first night!!
Have not tried the pillows but from your quote I think I will stick to the Down filled pillows we have that mould nicely and support where needed.

The only mattress I have ever truly loved was a waterbed. Alas, it kept springing tiny little leaks, just pinholes round the corners, that were hard work to clean up because you had to lift this enormous bag of water out of the way - it could take an hour or more So I reluctantly had to get rid of it. But it gave me the best sleep I've ever had.
