It will be on your deeds.  Incidentally, mine is on the right
If it is not on your deeds then there is no rule of thumb.

Deeds have all been done away with, the only thing that counts now is your Registration at the Land Registry. To see this click here and follow the instructions. You need to look at the Register and the Plan - you can also have a look at your neighbours Register and Plan if you wish. If nothing is stated then there is no specific ownership.

You MUST check. I've lived in 3 different terrace houses. The first one our fence was on the left, the second one our fence was on the right and in this house all boundaries are jointly owned!
Just checked my address on zmudge's link and there is no record.
I think the register only includes houses bought fairly recently.
We bought our house 21 yrs ago.
PS We are responsible for all 4 boundaries - we are the last house in the street.
zmudge is mostly right. For land where the title is registered at HM Land Registry the deeds known as Land Certificates and Charge Certificates ceased to have any legal significance in October 2003, the definitive title being that maintained on HM Land Registry's computer. However this did not mean that all deeds in respect of registered land ceased to exist. They are still physically around. Moreover as silly moo has discovered, not all land is registerd at HM Land Registry. This is because the process of registration was brought in gradually from 1 January 1926, area by area, and because registration only took place on a sale of the land after the area became a compulsory registration area. You can now voluntarily register your title if you wish.

Land Registration commenced in 1862. However, confining ourselves to fences do you have your deeds? If so, click here and compare your words and plan with this. Please then post any further queries arising and I'll attempt to resolve.

Regarding the link, read "How are boundaries defined" on the page which opens, then click "Boundaries" on the left, then click "Whose fence is it ?" on the right.
the post is on your side
I live in the detached house which backs onto 2 other properties and there is 2 fences in my garden and neither of them are mine and are the responsibility of the other house owners , it should be on your deeds if you are in doubt seek legal advice.
