Lindy Loo's sites are certainly good information.  As indicated, one has to make the determination as to how you intend to install the new lawn, i.e., installing sod (I think it's turf in UK), or seeding.  In either case, again, as the sites indicate, surface preparation is important.  I would only add a few tips.  If you install turf, don/t spare the watering.  At least 1 inch every two or three days for the first two weeks.  Second, if you seed the area, obtain seed oats, the kind farmer's use to grow that crop and mix it with your grass seed. (About 4 to 1 ratio.) It will come up first and provide shade and draw water and nutrients to the surrounding oat and new grass plants.  We call it a nurse crop here in the western U.S.  At the first mowing, the oat crop disappears.
