removing the glue from jam jars? My friend is making jam and needs some jars, I've washed them and tried to take the labels off but the glue is still stuck to the jars, they've been soaking all afternoon.

Have you tried nail varnish remover, that sometimes works. Sounds like a very strong glue.Normally after a long soak, the labels just peel off. What a pain!
You can get spray on label remover which is based on limolene oil. If hot water doesn't get the glue off then vegetable oil (olive, sunflower etc) almost certainly will over a day or so.

Hi barb and Ron, I usually manage to get the label off cleanly but two of the jars have glue all the way around. My friend is short of jars and needs them this weekend. I was tempted to sling them but I'll try cif and a brillo. No time to wait for the sticky stuff remover ron, but it is worth bearing in mind in the future thanks for the link x

Thanks jomifl, didn't see you, I'll try the veg oil treatment I think that may work.
Thinners.
WD40
Just spray it with a little hair spray... let it sit for a few minutes... et voila!
I use one of those metal pan scrubs, like brillo but the wire is thicker. Don't know the proper name, but it is a pain to do.
Just give 'em to her, gran, she can stick her own labels over the top :-)
There's a spray you can get in diy stores called sticky stuff remover. It's ideal for gummed labels

Thanks for all your suggestions, I've got the wire scrubber as a failsafe. But it would be interesting to see which works the best. Like the sound of the hairspray and the veg oil. Not sure about WD40 or paint thinner in case I can't get the smell off, because she'll probably give the that jar of jam to me. Failing that boxy I could just act daft and give them to her. I'll let you know.

Tried the hairspray on the stickiest jar, that seemed to work the best. The veg oil was a bit messy on the other jar which had a thicker layer of glue, I was worried the oil would get inside the jar. I should have put the lids on first. Those methods worked, but I still had to finish them off with a bit of cif and the wire scrubber, now soaking them again in hot soapy water to get the smell of the hairspray away. I'll look out for the sticky stuff remover or better stlll leave the labels on.
Most of the things I would have suggested have been said already. If you are giving these jars away why are you cleaning them???
lighter fluid works very well and fast...also white spirit

olive oil can work too...but can be messy
WD40 - marvellous stuff! Gets paint off your hands without drying them out to!
We put all our jars through the dishwasher to reuse them for other things. The labels come off cleanly.
Zoff you buy it at the chemists.

I wish i could help. I bought lots of storage jars, and tried in vain to get the labels off, all the advice on AB, washing up liquid, nail varnish remover and some toxic stuff you buy from hardware store and nothing. I took them back to the shop and got my money back.
