removing the glue from jam jars? My friend is making jam and needs some jars, I've washed them and tried to take the labels off but the glue is still stuck to the jars, they've been soaking all afternoon.

My friend is short of jars and needs them this weekend. I was tempted to sling them but I'll try cif and a brillo. No time to wait for the sticky stuff remover ron, but it is worth bearing in mind in the future thanks for the link x
Thanks for all your suggestions, I've got the wire scrubber as a failsafe. But it would be interesting to see which works the best. Like the sound of the hairspray and the veg oil. Not sure about WD40 or paint thinner in case I can't get the smell off, because she'll probably give the that jar of jam to me. Failing that boxy I could just act daft and give them to her. I'll let you know.
Tried the hairspray on the stickiest jar, that seemed to work the best. The veg oil was a bit messy on the other jar which had a thicker layer of glue, I was worried the oil would get inside the jar. I should have put the lids on first. Those methods worked, but I still had to finish them off with a bit of cif and the wire scrubber, now soaking them again in hot soapy water to get the smell of the hairspray away. I'll look out for the sticky stuff remover or better stlll leave the labels on.
