the sink must be partially blocked. Try this.
Has the sink always been slow? And is the pipe freely emptying into air or is it emptying into water?

I use this and it is quite effective, but not now. Its never been a fast emptying sink, but lately its got worse. The outside pipe goes into the drain, but there is a space between pipe and drain.
My Dad has one of these slow empty sinks - the original plumbing wasn't "quite right", and it has a tendency to get slower over time. He pours lots of BOILING water down occasionally and it improves. Presumably caused by fatty deposits.
Have a look under the sink, Sam.......... there should be a white plastic trap. If it's a bottle trap, it will have a lower half that can be unscrewed and cleaned out.
If it's an older, "P" or "S" trap (u-bend shaped like a P or an S), you have to unscrew the whole trap to clean it out .......... go for it :o)

Thanx everyone for your help, will do further investigations.
My daughter has a bathroom sink which became very slow to empty, she bought a bottle of sink drain cleaner from the £1 shop, and it took that, plus another bottle to completely clear all the gunge. Certainly worth a try in your kitchen sink.
