Water meters.

My daughter has just moved house. Is it compulsory that when you move that you have to have a water meter installed as this is what she was told by Severn Trent. She does not want a meter installed. She did not have one in the previous house.I know Severn Trent are putting in water meters in all new houses now but I think they have just told her that she must have as they want everyone to have one. I have looked on the site and I can't find anywhere where it says it is compulory.

Nothing about having to have them fitted.

Second question "Can I change my mind" seems to indicate you dont actually have to use it even if it is fitted.

Is there any particular reason why she doesn't want one? It could well work out to be a cheaper option.

I have had a water meter fitted for this house and it has literally halved my water bill. It has also made me more aware when using water not to waste any. If you have children it might be more difficult but in the end they will be learning too (not to waste water).

Our water authority has been doing this for years and we had to have a meter when we moved about 6 years ago. I was a bit worried about the bills but we carried on using water as we had done and if anything the bills are less than what we were paying before.

It depends really how many people live in the house. I changed to a water meter because there is only me in the house. But my son (and his wife and four children) was advised not to change to a water meter, as it would cost him more than just getting a water bill. I don't think you 'have' to change to a meter, but if you do change, then you can't change back again.

The important point is that with a meter you pay for what you use and that is then fair to all. It also encourages economy of use.

That said, they said installation was compulsory, but using it wasn't - how screwed up is that!
