Being new to having a dishwasher I don't know if this is normal. When I removed the pots from the dishwasher there was about 1-2 cms of water left in it, should this have disappeared or is this normal? many thanks.

Most dishwashers would be empty of water once they'd finished their cycle. If there's water left at the bottom it is usually because the filter is blocked or clogged or the outlet pipe. So clean out the filter and outlet and see if it happens again. If it does you may need a service engineer to call but check the instructions for the locations of all the filters as some machines have more than one.
who plumbed it in ? could be the waste is not quite right to allow the water to drain...
Having said that i had one that did and i just lived with it, ok as long as you use it quite often, especially in the summer !

There's obviosly a problem with the discharge,if the machine is new it should empty completly, as suggested check the filters but i would suspect the drainage pipe is kinked or blocked in some way.I hope this helps
Are you letting it finish the cycle fully?

Thanks for all your answers - will check filter etc.
The waste is PUMPED out and relies on a pressure/height switch .. it does not syphon out or anything like that.
It's normal for water to sit in sump after use... but it should not be particularly visible.
Do a pump out and check again. Did you switch off prematurely. Finger trouble?
I was asked to look at a similar problem and found that the connection from the dishwasher to the u-bend under the sink was very low and when the sink was emptied water was running back to the dishwasher. There was a spare connection higher up and connecting to that and putting the blank on the lower one sorted it.
I had this problem and it was because the motor had gone, but the machine was 5 years old whereas it sounds like yours is new?
