I have an extractor fan in the ceiling of my bathroom and it has started making a strange knocking sound every 2 - 3 seconds.
Any idea what could be causing it and if it is still safe to use?
Thanks

bit of dust/hair?
hoover it out.carefully!

Thanks sinderella, have already done that but it's quite a loud knocking noise, louder than if it was hair or dust.
Could be a bearing has worn out. How old is it? Can you post the make and type?
How long have you had it? They don't last for ever - I think I'm on my third in 25 years. The bearings of the fan might have simply worn out. They aren't megabucks to buy but you need a bit of electrical common sense to install them.

Will see if I still have the receipt, make and model. Have only lived here 6 years and it's not the original but will go and check for sure.

Have found my receipt. Bought on 07/06/2006 and it says DX200T Fan Expalair. If it is the bearings will I need to get an electrician out and do you know how much that would cost please?
Sounds like it's gone off its axis and is knocking against the surround.
Sometimes, if someone has been naughty and not ducted it to outside, bits of wood or debris get stuck in there. If it is ducted, give it a good thump with your hand. Otherwise, they're cheap and easy to replace. :o)
Ooooh ............. posh one ............ £58.
I think I would take it down and have a look Missy :o)

As far as I know it isn't ducted outside. All I know is the loft is above it but I am too ancient to get up there to look. It cost me £55.52 5 yrs ago so they have probably have gone up since then and then there's the cost of fitting it.
Would it be cheaper for me to get an electrician out to have a look at it first do you think?
Either an electrician, or a local handyman. There should be an isolator switch nearby to make sure it's safe to take down for a look.

Thanks for you help.
I think you'll be replacing the fan.
