I'm currently looking for a house to rent with a budget of about £650. In the area I live, I will get for that a cluster house with 2 beds and a small garden if I'm really lucky. As the garden thing is really important then I'm more likely to find a one bed house for that price.

Went to visit my brother and SIL who have recently moved to Grantham and are renting for a short time. They happen to also be paying £650 a month for their house. The difference is for their money they get three bedrooms, huge kitchen, conservatory, big rooms and approx an acre of land. Oh and not for forget the gardener thrown in. All in a really lovely village setting but within a few minutes of the town.

I don't really have a question. I just wanted to have a good old sulk about it.

The awful thing is there is a campaign going at the moment to keep it and make it a listed building! I mean for funks sake - Royal Albert hall, yes - this, categorically NO.
What's wrong with it sasskins?

London's a whole different game Rowan.

My sis and her husband are currently selling their flat which has a very desirable post code but happens to be on a dual carriageway. If they sell it at it's asking price they will double what they paid for it 5 years ago.

And this is a (all be it very nice) 2 bed flat which they in essence swapped for a 3 story, 5 bed town house round here. Crazy money.
Are the wages not lower than closer to the capital though. I looked at places to rent in cornwall not long ago, I could get massively more for my money but would need to cut my wages by half... on the wage I am I could live like a queen but that would not be the wage I get there, (for doing the same job, I checked!)

Sorry, swapped from that house to the flat for the same amount of money.
It's plug ugly Ed! And dirty. And a den of vice! The general consensus is to develop a new interchange to incorporate train & bus station. Only obstruction is the nellies that think this is a thing of beauty, rather than an ugly eyesore. The battle rages on Ed......
Isnt Licolnshire one of the cheapest places to buy/rent in the UK due to low employment or something?
China that's why I did so well. York is a cheaper place to live than London, but not cheap for oop North. I was lucky enough to have a job with BT which had a national pay scale...........
York is beautiful though craft - I went to live there in 1973 - met my first husband there. That was the only downside.
I know I looked at jobs in north wales and the salaries we not even half what i get now and the nice areas the property prices were about the same as Birmingham
Gawd sasskins!!!! That has got to be the ugliest building I've ever seen.
there are plenty of affordable houses in birmingham for £650 a month as long as you remain realistic and avoid the affluent postcodes. a lot of 3 bed houses with a garden can be snapped up for £595 per month
My point exactly Chrissa!
My job has a national pay scale too... Unfortunately there's very little in my band available down south it would seem, and one job I saw which was also for child protection was about three bands lower than my current one so I suspect it's probably not the same thing; although if it is then they need to up their wage by several thousand, I wouldn't do the job I do currently for any less. I'd quite like to go live by the sea so am hoping that I won the lottery last night. :c)
nice building, sasskins; the world has many thousands of worse looking carparks/bus stations
Really jno - where?
China if I win on Friday I'll slip you a few quid :-)
I like that building sasskins, its different and unique
Ditto! :c)

Wherever, really. They're mostly just ugly grey shoeboxes of one sort or another. That one isn't.
