Leather Not Smelling Like Leather Anymore

My mate got a new chair, and she said it was leather, i doubted it, but she was right, the smell of leather is long gone..

The chair may be new but the leather could have been lying around in a factory for some time.

i have noticed this in the motor trade world, very few cars with so called leather interior actually smell like leather, an exception to this is the Cadillac, it really does smell like you expect leather to and not just in the the short term.

Some leather used in furnishings has a finish put on it to repel stains which changes the smell. We recently bought a leather sofa and it does'nt smell of leather.

Manufacturers sometimes use a light spray of leather oil on their products to give that typical smell. They've especially done this with shoes for many years. It's designed to impress on the buyer that they're buying real leather, but the smell does tend to fade fairly quickly.
