If you find their point of entry - under a door, through an airbrick etc. I've always found a line of ant powder effective.

There is also a brilliant liquid poison you can buy in a small tube. Ants love it and eat it as food, then take it back to the nest which is a permanent solution. (The name of it is similar to a Japanese airline as I can't post the name !)

The aerosol sprays are very effective.  Spray the stuff around the inner  perimeter in a generous band and the nasties will not cross  -  well not alive anyway.

The spray gook lasts for a long time and the funny smell goes away quickly

I just had ants in my kitchen, around the cat's food bowl.  Put talcum powder around the edges where you think the ants are coming in.  Touch wood I haven't had any more ants.  Bit messy but it works.

We also use talcum powder. Another good thing to use is vinegar which is organic (the cat won't like it, however). You can add a little vinegar to water and mop the floor or wipe down kitchen counters.

Nippon or Raid.
