A simple bolt would do if you just want to keep people out when you are in.
What sort of tools do you have available and what skills do you have?
If you are out then a bolt and padlock on the out side.
of course you always run the risk of being bolted in by some smart alick
A chair wedged under the door knob is effective.

Is it hard to change the handle from a non locking to a lockable one!!?

Normal tool box available nothing out of the ordinarly and seriously basic skills....not much but i can use a screwdriver etc lol xx
Seriously though best bet is to get a proper lock fitted by a carpenter.
Yes a lot of work to change handle to locking tyoe , you need to be able to chisle out the door and architrave. Best done by expert. Sorry.
I agree with Nanny. A carpenter would have a yale lock on your door in 20 minutes.

Is this in your parents house?

I'd go ballistic if someone put a lock on the door preventing me getting into a room in my house.

Sure your 'rents are ok with this Tinks?
