removed two year old carpet and discovered perfect condition & correctly fitted underlay. Can I lay wooden flooring on this or do I need the type specified for wooden floors?

If you are decribing a subflooring made of plywood or similiar product, then this is an excellent underlay for the laminate flooring.  All that's required is the accompanying fabric or plasticized material for sound deadining that is recommended for laminate.  It would also be appropriate for true tongue and groove 3/4" hardwood flooring...
