1.Nick and john were exercising when the subject of weight came up. Nick had no problem telling john his weight. But John said he had more 'mass' than he wanted. He wouldnt reveal his exact weight but did tell nick a riddle. 'I weigh 147 pounds plus half my weight' How much does he weigh?

2. A farmer knows that 20 of his hens, housed in 3 coops, will hatch 30 eggs in 18 days. How long will it take 30 hens, housed in 4 coops to hatch the same number of eggs?

3.How can you measure 1 gallon of juice out of a barrel if you have available is a 3 gallon and a 5 gallon pitcher?

4. Students with a class size of less than 30 took a maths test. One third of the class got a 'B', one quarter got a 'B-', one sixth got a 'C'  and one eigth failed. The remainder of the students got an 'A'. How many students got an 'A'

5.When manufacturing bars of soap, the cutting machine produces scraps. The scraps from 11 bars of soap can be made into one extra bar. What is the total amount of bars that can be made after cutting 250 bars of soap?

6.Kerry loves dumplings, He can eat 32 of them in one hour. His brother pete needs 3 hours to eat the same amount. How long will it take them both together to eat 32 dumplings?

7.Joe bought a bag of oranges on monday and ate a third of them. On tuesday he ate half the remaining oranges. On Weds he looked in the bag to find he only had 2 oranges left. How many were there originally?

8.Joan and Jane are sisters. Jean is Joans daughter and 12 years younger than her aunt.Joan is twice as old as Jean. Four years ago, Joan was the same age as Jane is now,  and Jane was twice as old as her Niece. How old is Jean?

Q3 Fill up the 3 gallon pitcher and then empty into the 5 gallon pitcher. Fill the 3 gallon pitcher again and pour what you can into the 5 gallon pitcher to fill it. This will leave 1 gallon in the 3 gallon pitcher. Empty the 5 gallon pitcher and tip the 1 gallon that remains in the 3 gallon pitcher into the 5 gallon pitcher. Fill up the 3 gallon pitcher and pour into the 5 gallon pitcher. Hey presto - 4 gallons!

Q7 - Answer is 6 oranges originally.

2. Is this a trick question? Does it take 18 days to hatch any egg?

4. Only 3 got A's . The fractions add up to 21/24 and there are less than 30 in the class.

5. From the 250 bars there  will be enough scraps to make 22 extra bars with 8 bits left over. From their bits, you will be able to make another 2 bars (with the same 8 bits left over).

At the end of the day, your 250 bars will produce another 24 bars with 10 bits left over. ... Not quite enough to make yet one more bar!

It would have been a better problem if it had started off with 251 bars!

6. The answer is 45 minutes. In 3 hours, they are eating at a combined rate of 128 (= 4x32) per 3 hours. Hence they can scoff 32 in 3/4 hour!

8. Jean is as old as her tongue, but older than her teeth!  Are you sure you've got this one set out correctly. The "facts" don't seem to stack up!!

1.  Not sure if this is a trick or not. I think the 147pounds might include an additional half of  his weight, so ( weight + half of weight) = 147 pounds. This would mean his weight was 94 pounds. If 3/2 = 147, then 1/2 = 49, so full weight = 94 pounds

But, as I said, not sure if I am reading this one correct or not!

No, better2try question 1 is not a trick question. If John weighs 147 pounds plus half his weight, then 147 pounds IS half his weight. John is 294 pounds.

2. 12 Days

Coops are irrelevant. If 20 hens lay 30 eggs, that means each hen lays (theoretically) 1 and a half eggs every 18 days.

that means each half egg is layed (theoretically) every 6 days (18 divided by 3 is 6) and so 1 whole egg is layed every 12 days.

30 hens would therefore take 12 days to lay 30 eggs)

Cobalt272,  I agree that the number of coops is irrelevant, but then so is most of the information given. The question is not about hens laying eggs, but hatching eggs!

If one hen sits on a dozen eggs, they will hatch in 18 days! If two hens each sit on six eggs, they will hatch in 18 days!
