Apparently there is a method of cleaning tarnished teaspoons involving silver foil

Everyone I ask has heard about it but nobody knows the details

Do you put the spoons in a bowl of water with some bits of silver foil and baking soda? And then the dirt swims over to the foil because of a chemical reaction?

I'll try it

Before you try it, Compostella you should wait for a second opinion from somebody like Andy Hughes etc. as I am not absolutely sure that was right.

tipking says its washing soda

I have never tried this and you probably shouldn't do it with your valuable antiques. Tipking is a great site though

Line the bottom of a pan with aluminium foil and place your silverware upon it (contact is crucial).

In a second pan boil some water and dissolve a cup of baking soda and some table salt into it. Allow the water to cool slightly before pouring this solution over your silver, ensuring it is fully covered by water.

instead of aluminium foil you could use foil take-away containers.

I don't know if it's true but apparantly vinegar (old wives tale) is supposed to be good for things like that....

If your teaspoons are stainless steel they will come up like new if you soak them in a solution of water and bleach overnight.  Works every time for me!
