Anyone know how to crochet? Advice needed.

Hi don't know what section to put this in.
I have decided to learn how to crochet, have got a book taken half an hour just to get the hang of chains. I am using double knitting wool I had left over from knitting a jumper can I use it to learn how to crochet or do I need special crochet yarn? When I try to do the 3rd row the wool keeps splitting and I can't see where to put the hook. Any advice?

It sounds as if you are pulling too tight and drawing the holes closed. Let the yarn/wool slip freely through and don't tension too much.
Take your time. It's fiddly when you're learning but worth it.

Back again the video is making it a lot easier, thank you, my only problem is I'm a knitter and keep wanting to hold the wool and wind round with my right hand like I would knitting. Does this make a difference to the outcome? My left hand does not want to wind it round, god this is driving me nuts, it looks so simple in the videos. Daughter is learning but she is left handed to we're not much help to each other.
