On my fridge 1 is the lowest, I usually keep mine on 5, except when the weather is really warm and then I turn it up to 7.
They vary - mine's higher number, lower temperature.
However, find out by turning the dial. The direction you turn it that switches the compressor on will give you lower temperatures.

thank you all so much for your help
I leave mine between 2 and 3 and the temperature runs at about 5 degrees centigrade which I think is OK.
The maximum setting is 6.
Most people have the temperature set way too cold. A good "rule of thumb" is if the drinks in your fridge are cool enough to your taste, and the ice-cream in the freezer is firm enough for you, than you've go the correct setting.
"got"
It really annoys me that the dials on fridges are so ambiguous. Either go for trial and error...turn it to '7' and see if it is colder than ''1'. If you have a thermometer then 5C for fridge and -18C for freezer are the recommended temps.
The higher number is the coldest try turning the dial to a lower number when you hear the motor running. The motor will stop hence you are changing the setting warmer.
Your visitor wasn't my M in L was she? My M in L switched of the fridge/freezer at the wall on Christmas Eve because she didn't like things left on all night, she refused to have a fridge at all. The children enjoyed runny ice cream at breakfast though as a Christmas Day treat.
In my fridge max is like a freezer, one mm away from max registers are "spoil" on the thermometer. I'm toying with the idea of leaving it on max and keeping the door ajar.
