Moles have certainly something to answer for, not only do they ruin your garden, but it appears they are responsible for the recent flooding of rivers, by undermining the banks.
My question is; Why is it illegal to kill a mole?

Humans have certainly something to answer for, not only do they ruin the earth upon which other creatures were already established, but it appears that they have been responsible for the melting of the polar ice-caps, the polluting of the air, the extinction of numerous species of plants and animals with resultant catastrophic environmental effects, the further poisoning of the planet with their wars and the clumsy disposal of radioactive waste from their power stations leading to mutation and permanent damage to land
...(I could go on).

It isn't illegal to kill moles in the UK. They are not a protected species.

And the idea that they cause floods by undermining banks seems very fanciful. The tunnels they excavate are tiny in diameter. Coypu are the real danger to rivers and drainage channels,

Coypu do. Moles don't. Have you ever seen any ground undermined by moles? The tunnels they make are tiny, hardly wider than a man's finger

There are no moles in Ireland. I think St Patrick banished them along with the snakes. Yet we still have floods.
It might have more to do with building in unsuitable locations and covering vast areas with concrete and tarmac so that the rainwater can't soak into the earth.
