If there is a better place to post this question please advise me. I have a Whirlpool AWE 6517 top loader automatic washing machine which is failing to go into the spin cycle. I would like to attempt to repair this myself if it is the belt that has got slack. I have had top loaders since 1969 first Philips and now Whirlpool. Are there any engineers out there who can give me advice as I am well able to have a go myself.

it will be the brushes most likely, I've replaced the brushed on a few machines, it's abit tricky getting to them in some machines but they're easy enough, they are 2 small oblong rubber blocks and cost about £12 - £15 depending where you get them, maybe less online, look under the top and you'll see them either side of the drum but not usually level with one another.
That would be a weird place to mount the motor on a top-loader :) also I don't think it's a brushed motor in that model (I certainly can't find brushes for sale anywhere)

Given the fact it's probably not a brushed motor then I'd check the pressure switch and pump were operating correctly, after that I'd probably suspect the motor control module... although the module is a pain because it's almost impossible to test them and it's an expensive part to replace on the off chance.
BTW.... if it is a brushed motor I'd agree the brushes are the first thing to check.
How old is the machine?

Perhaps it is time to buy a new one.

I think it was purchased in 2009. Not old but they are not made as well as they used to be. How can I check whether or not it is the brushes, as there are several spares sites on the net?
They are not made as well as they used to be, but in real terms they are darn cheap now compared to years ago.
