For machines made in the U.S., the job can be simple or daunting.  Most require disassembling of back of machine to reach the element.  The element, at least here, is not very expensive.  It should be a circular, coiled (spring-like) wire attached to a backing plate just in front of the tumbling tub.  The fan blows across this to dry the clothes.  You could try going to Google to search for a service diagram of the machine by brand name.  Problem is, some machines sold by chain stores and marketed under their names are actually made by other manufacturers.  If you find the tag with the Serial Number, it should show who the manufacturer.  Best of luck!
If you're in the UK try www.interspares.co.uk . I've used them many times, very good!

thank you both! its only til we can afford a new one, but being a mum to a disabled boy who likes to dribble using an airer is a pain lol

Are you sure it's the element?

All tumble-dryer elements have a simple 'over-heat' protectection trip-out to prevent fire in the event of the main thermostat failing. This may have tripped due to a build up of fluff, faulty thermostat or simply old age. This trip should not reset itself but can be done manualy or replaced if necessary.
