Sky-A Problem Never Solved

I am a little angry.
Just a small, tiny, weeny bit peed off.
Irritated,slightly.
Allow me to explain my small annoyance.....

Once upon a time, when wireless was something the tech savvy people where beginning to enjoy,we got out Sky set up.A desktop was our only PC (remember those days?)so the router was placed in the living room and an extension lead connected that to the phone box in the hall.A socket was on the end of the extension,so the phone could still plug in too.All was well.

Many happy years passed, technology improved and wireless was the norm.Consoles came and went, laptops and netbooks where the norm.Except for our desktop PC.It enjoyed having its wired connection, that pride of place in the living room, smug knowing that if the kids used too many consoles,it had the power to halt that, while still surfing the net itself.

Then the evil phone line monster showed itself.Making crackling noises down the phoneline the user shuddered with fear. But all was not lost. Those lovely people at Sky sent round the brave repair man,who banished the monster.

Or so we thought.....

The next day,the phone in the hall laughed and crackled 'ha ha ha I'm back!' 'Oh no'said our beautiful (and deluded!) damsel cried 'I must call Sky'
And she did
Only this time,Sky where not the heroes they where last time,as they chuckled 'Ha ha-you have to set up your router next to the phone box,THAT's the way we are told now,and anyway we don't repair mistakes made long, long ago,you don't have cover so it is now up to you!'
'We have told you how to fix the problem, your router extension is old and weary, and quite frankly should not have been there in the first place.Remove it and make everything wireless. At your own cost.'

Our damsel was rather annoyed at this, saying to Sky 'but you set it up like this, how can I,a mere disabled woman past her best with DIY change things. Why should I?'
'That is the way we do things now.Begone woman and fix it yourself' insisted the nasty man at Sky.

So here I am now, having to make my desktop wi fi or live with the hissing monster down the hall phone.
That is the cause of my irritation.

Oh,that and I have just accidentally washed my favourite earring down the plughole while washing my hair.

I will scream in a minute.....

Sorry about the rant,I think I am going slightly loopy.

i was just about to change to sky......
you should threaten to leave they will be round before you have put the phone down :-)
Your earring may still be in the U bend.

Don't put more than a dribble down until you or someone helpful has dismantled it and got it out. (get old towels ready for the mess)

I did say to them that I was going to go to Virgin, and they said 'do you want us to arrange a disconnection date now?'

Can you believe that!!

I was kind of hoping they would say they would fix it,but they sounded like they could not wait to see the back of me.That was to three different people too.I would go to Virgin, but after the initial 6 months it would cost us £13 per month more AND no Sky Atlantic (OH watches it now and again)

As for my poor earring,it was so small,it would of slithered through the U bend no problem. The fact that a whole sink full of water helped flush it through wont of helped.

I am going to write one mother of a complain letter,I mean telling a disabled woman to get to the micro-filter that is behind a 6 foot high(and 8 foot wide come to think of it)unit is a tad unreasonable.

Also just figured out,IF we wi fi the desktop and IF we move the router then we still have to buy a new phone that is a two phone base unit and another phone set up.Not cheap.

Never mind the earring,I am going round the bend!!

Thanks for your answers -mccfluff-don't do it.....please

Aya
To be fair they wouldn't know that the micro filter is behind a 6 foot high 8 foot wide unit, and I guess wouldn't know of your disability.
Question Author
I have forgotten how many times I told them!

When I was getting told to add a microfilter to the plug in the hall,I was telling them that two microfilter would not work(we had tried this)and yet he insisted on me doing this!!Honestly I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall while arguing with the kids, you know when you are going round and round in circles.Arrrrrrrgh

Even when the conversation was just beginning I told him I was disabled when he wanted me to unplug the phone. When I was talking to him and he told me to do this I said 'well I can't ' @why?' he asked in a narky tone
'well' I said 'One I am disabled....and two it would cut you off!!'

That is the kind of thing I was dealing with.
Hopefully a complaint letter will get someone more reasonable on the end of the phone.
Find the name of the M.D./CEO and write personally to that person. Make sure you put your name and address on the envelope, as that seems to make postroom staff think that you know the person to whom you are writing.

The router has a wire that comes out of it that goes to an extension, instead of the phone socket. This extension then goes behind the HUGE unit we have in the livingroom to the hall,to the master socket. The part that plugs into the socket has two phone sockets on it,where the phone in the hall plugs in,hey presto! It is this extension that has the problem.

When the engineer came out the other day,he replaced the socket in the hall with a new top piece and you should see the state of it! Cross threaded, ill fitting, wonky, a two year old could of done better. Is that the standard of work that we can expect nowadays?

If I move the router,I lose the phone in the living room, and I know it sounds a lot,but I cannot get around holding a phone,so I like to have them easily accessible, which the hall and living room are.Its my home, surly I can have it set up how I like, not how Sky like?

How do I get the name of the MD/CEO/bigwig?I like the sound of sending the letter to him.Pity I will have to hand write it though, the printer we have did nasty, terrible things to the laptop so I don't want to connect that up again-but that's another story.....

Why is the drain outside clear the one time I drop something of value down there? meaning the earring. At least I have ordered another,so that maight cheer me up when it gets here.

Thanks for all your comments, and methyl, you are one cleaver clogs connecting the two posts together-well done (I am jealous really, cos I forgot how to do a link so I didn't!!

The extension is like no other I have seen.Having a closer look at the set up,it gets worse. The sky box has a wire coming out of it that look like it should plug into a phone socket.Instead it goes into a 2 into 1 adapter. The phone also goes into this adapter. The adapter then goes into a microfilter,as does the router. The filter is then plugged into a wire which has 'sky tv do no remove' on it.It is this wire that then goes and plugs into the phone socket in the hall and has sky tv do not remove on this end also.
I was not aware that the sky box had a lead going into a phone socket and don't know what this is for-no one has mentioned it.

So to try and sum up and answer your questions:Living room has
one phone
sky box(old version,not sky +)
router
wired desktop
(one BIG unit that hold everything bar PC,that is on the other side of the living room with long extension connecting it to the router)

Extension lead that seems to connect living room to hall socket. Both ends say sky tv do not remove. The end that goes in the hall socket has two phone sockets on it.

Hall has another phone
main BT phone box with one socket (Which was very old)

If the extension lead is to blame,I don't understand how everything else is working.I also don't understand why the sky box phone lead has not been mentioned. If that has to plug into the phone line, then has that got to move to the hall as well as the router, which is just ridiculous or is it no longer needed?
Just answered that question, without the phone line I cannot use interactive, help or box office.
I think the problem is the part of the extension that plugs into the box in the hall,as if the phone sockets are broken.Maybe I could try cleaning them.Any advice on cleaning a phone socket?

Thanks for your help so far methyl, wish I could draw you a diagram but I have tried my best to describe it .
Maybe somewhere in this mess the problem of the phone cutting out the broadband can be sorted(either phone getting used cut the internet, except the wired desktop)
Any questions, ask and I will try to answer.
Thanks again
Aya
welcome to sky....fine until there's a problem, but useless after. why not join virginmedia instead - i am so glad i did.
Question Author
I was going to join Virgin, their package look great for the first 6 months, but then I would of been paying £13 a month more-just cannot do that.
Great, we're with o2 Broadband, we think they're fantastic....but we recently had a letter to say they've sold their home broadband service to Sky and we're soon to be transferred to them. I wasn't happy when I got the letter, I'm even less happy having read this!
