Painting False Bricks.

I am revamping the kitchen - painting cupboards, walls and ceiling. We have some false bricks that make up the microwave housing etc and I would like to paint them to match the walls.
They are currently brick coloured. If you wipe them with a damp cloth the colour comes off so I can imagine that will happen with the paint.
Can I seal them with PVA glue or anything else?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

Might be a good idea to give them a good scrub first, Patricia, if there's any coating that wants to come off.

5:1 water:PVA would stabilise them.
