A Decking Mistake
32 Answers
I had a smallish area of decking laid in an awkward spot in the garden last year. I love black in the garden so I used the Cuprunol Black Ash wood preservative I had for the fences and shed to paint the decking. Mistake I now know.
Despite having no traffic on it it is peeling. Can I do anything without having to strip it all off or hide it with a rug?
Thanks...Gx

I'm sure I asked when I bought it if I could use it on decking but they tell you anything in B&Q if you don't know. Had a word with them today and they say I should have used decking stain.....that doesn't come in black though.

Do you have a local hardware shop (as opposed to B&Q and the like)? I always go to our local shop first and they are brilliant at giving advice.
(I went in earlier in the week and forgot the name of the item I'd gone for. Not the brand name, the name of the implement itself. They were patience personnified and went through a long list of items when all I could utter was "a paint thingy")

If you're looking for a workout you can buy a small wire brush on a broom handle (assuming you're allowed such a thing after whatever went on with the pressure washer) that'll get into the grooves and roughen the surface of the wood at the same time.
You'll then be able to treat the decking with matt black emulsion or blackboard paint which can be sealed with exterior varnish when dry.

Right..thanks. I've never liked decking....Lord and all the saints only know what I was thinking of when I did it.
Plan B......I wonder if it will support being paved with the same slabs as the patio? I do like slabs...though I can see it collapsing with the weight.
Just had another look and I really don't like it enough to put much effort into remedying it although it has been done very well. x
